FEBRUARY NEWS UPDATE
A long overdue hello and Happy 2014! Thank you for your patience. As you know we’re a small team with a beast of a festival now but we’re happy to report that we are full steam ahead with our plans for our second festival 17-19 October. It aims to consolidate all we achieved in our inaugural year and to learn from lessons and feedback from audiences and creators. There’ll be new elements as well as improvements within some of the aspects of last year’s event. The Family Zone will expand and the Comics Clocktower will be free entry to the public.
We plan to launch the full programme by the end of April with tickets on sale and a much simpler and easier booking system. Remember aside from the ticketed events there’s lots of free activity too including exhibitions and a Windows on Comic Art Trail through Kendal. We will update you each month with developments and news and for now here is some recently released information on special projects in case you haven’t seen them yet :-
1. Advance announcement re: one of our key US guests – Scott McCloud. He will be making an exclusive UK appearance in 2014 at the festival. Scott is frequently referred to as the “Aristotle of Comics” and famously wrote Understanding Comics amongst other seminal works. More at his website www.scottmccloud.com. There’ll be more about his role at the festival when we launch the full programme in April. More news on guests will gradually emerge from mid- March and we will keep you up-to-speed.
2. 24 Hour Comic Marathon. Create a 24-page comic in 24 hours – a concept devised by Scott McCloud in the early 1990s. New to this year’s festival this project is curated and produced by Dan Berry. He will work with a group of 6 artists, five of whom have been invited and the 6th is currently being selected from an open application process – we’ve been overwhelmed by the scale and quality of the response – help!! The five invited artists are: Fumio Obata, Krystina Baczynski, Sarah McIntyre, Jack Teagle and Dan Berry. They will each start working on a new comic on Thursday 16 October at 3pm and work through to 3pm on Friday 17 October. More detail nearer the time. More info here http://www.comicartfestival.com/competitions/
3. A Homesick Truant’s Cumbrian Yarn.
A co-commission with The Brewery Arts Centre of the fantastic Oliver East of Trains Are Mint fame. Oliver will walk (as close as possible) the train route from Arnside to Carlisle observing, documenting, drawing and creating a comic, exhibition and more….he’s well under way and has already self-published the first leg (Arnside to Grange-over-Sands). Find out more at www.olivereast.com
4. The Great War in Comics.
An exhibition at the Abbot Hall Art Gallery featuring three contrasting artists tackling the same subject – The Great War. We are honoured to have original artwork by Joe Colquhoun (Charley’s War), Charlie Adlard (White Death) and Ivan Petrus (Passchendale). Full information here http://www.comicartfestival.com/familyexhibitions/
Thank you for your ongoing support and interest. Without our audiences (live and online) there wouldn’t be a festival! More late March…..
