A maggio 2025 uscirà dal Treasury of British Comics una raccolta di strisce di ” Maroc the Mighty ” incentrate su un supereroe medievale: storie disegnate da Don Lawrence e raccolte dal fumetto settimanale d’avventure Lion .
Rebellion , per l’occasione, offre un’edizione esclusiva online con copertina rigida della raccolta di 96 pagine , insieme all’edizione tascabile disponibile per l’ordine presso tutte le migliori librerie e fumetterie (sia italiane, sia inglesi).
Originariamente serializzato su Lion, ” Maroc the Mighty ” è una storia d’avventura piena di azione su un supereroe del tredicesimo secolo. Cavaliere che combatte nelle Crociate, John Maroc entra in possesso della “Mano di Zar”, un amuleto magico che conferisce a chi lo indossa una forza sovrumana, ma solo quando è immerso nei raggi del sole.
Questa striscia di supereroi medievali è stata pubblicata su Lion tra il lavoro di Lawrence su ” Karl il Vichingo “, precedentemente raccolto da Rebellion, e il suo lavoro splendidamente dipinto sulla serie ” The Rise and Fall of the Trigan Empire “.
Pubblicate su Lion tra l’ottobre 1964 e il giugno 1966, le sceneggiature di “Maroc the Mighty” sono attribuite al leggendario scrittore fantasy Michael Moorcock , ma non le tre storie presenti nella raccolta: ” The Hand Of Zar “, ” The Red Knights of Morda ” e un racconto più breve, senza titolo sulla rivista stessa ma identificato all’estero come ” The Minimas Versus The Gigantos “.
Dopo che Lawrence si trasferì a Ranger , per disegnare ” The Rise and Fall of the Trigan Empire “, fu sostituito in “Maroc” da altri artisti, tra cui, a quanto pare, Geoff Campion , personaggio fisso di Lion . Queste storie successive, tra cui quelle presenti negli annuali di Lion , non sono incluse in questa raccolta.
Le storie disegnate da Don Lawrence furono ristampate su Lion nei primi anni ’70 e ampiamente pubblicate in Europa, anche su titoli come Stripoteka , Panorama , Plavi Vjesnik e Strane negli stati che all’epoca costituivano la Jugoslavia.

Biography
John Freeman, currently editor of Star Trek Explorer and former editor of Doctor Who Magazine, is also a comics writer and editor, and founder of the award-winning comics site downthetubes.net. He’s worked professionally in the British comics publishing industry for over 30 years, describing himself as a “freelance comics operative”, working as an editor, Creative Consultant and as a comics writer and events promoter.
His current projects include writing “Pilgrim: Secrets and Lies”, a four issue mini-series set in the “Pilgrim” universe from B7 Media; “Crucible” with 2000AD artist Smuzz; and a creator-owned SF adventure, working with Brazilian creators Wamberto Nicomedes. He also recently edited “Hancock: The Lad Himself”, a graphic novel about comedian Tony Hancock, by Stephen Walsh and Keith Page.
For fun, he’s working on “Doctor Who – Terror of the Deep“, a 90-episode not-for-profit newspaper strip with artist Danny Cushion.
Initially working at Marvel UK, joining the company in 1987, his editor credits include titles such as Doctor Who Magazine, Babylon 5 Magazine, Star Trek Magazine, (now Star Trek Explorer) and comics such as Havoc, Overkill, Death’s Head II, Warheads, Simpsons Comics UK and STRIP – The Adventure Comics Magazine. He also edited several digital and audio comics for ROK Comics, including “Team M.O.B.I.L.E.” and “The Beatles Story”.
He also edited the Lost Fleet mini-series and two Doctor Who mini-series for Titan Comics, which received critical acclaim.
Along with helping promote the annual Lakes International Comic Art Festival, his recent writing credits also include re-introducing some classic humour characters to a modern audience in two Cor and Buster Humour specials for Rebellion, working with artist Lew Stringer; and Death Duty and Skow Dogs with Dave Hailwood for the digital anthology, 100% Biodegradable.
