A new language for Europe.
With the support of the Creative Europe programme
of the European Union.
During these months, our Comic Art Europe project is going towards its end. But during these last months, a lot is still about to happen. In this newsletter you’ll find out about our global exhibition in Brussels, an exhibition at the Lakes International Comic Art Festival and a meet and greet with the Comic Art Europe artists.
In 2020 and in 2021, Comic Art Europe launched open calls regarding the themes “Visions of Tomorrow” and “Living Together”. Each time, five European artists were selected to participate in the project.
From 21 September until 10 December 2023, all 10 winning European artists, who participated in one of the two calls, will be shown in a global exhibition in the Comics Art Museum in Brussels. The exhibition invites visitors to discover the works created and developed during their artistic residencies in the partner countries of Comic Art Europe, whose themes “Visions of Tomorrow” and “Living Together” encourage reflection on the issues facing the world today.
Comic Art Europe is a European cooperation project bringing together the Lyon BD Organisation, the Comics Art Museum in Brussels, the Lakes International Comic Art Festival and the Escola de comics Joso, co-financed by the European Union’s Creative Europe programme. Curators of the exhibition are Jordi Sempere and Richard Foster.
You can find all the information as well on the website of the Comics Art Museum.
Artists: Filipa Beleza (Portugal), Marine des Mazery (France), Karrie Fransman (United Kingdom), Maria Surducan (Romania), Meikel Mathias (Germany), Silvia L. Ballart (Spain), Bernard Hage (Germany/Lebanon), James Albon (United Kingdom), Štěpánka Jislová (Czech Republic), Eva Pavlič (Slovenia).
The exhibition “Visions of tomorrow & Living together” is a production of Comic Art Europe, co-funded by the European Union’s Creative Europe programme.
From 29 September until 1 October 2023 a world of comic art will return to the Lake District (UK) for another dazzling edition of The Lakes International Comic Art Festival (LICAF). The family-friendly festival promises to offer you a diverse three-day program filled with kick-ass superheroes, live drawing sessions, interviews, presentations, workshops, exhibitions, book launches and much more. Part of this diverse program? A Comic Art Europe exhibition and a possibility to get to know some of Europe’s most talented, emerging comic artists.
On Sunday morning, 1 October, at 11am all five artists shown in the “Living Together” exhibition – Bernard Hage, Eva Pavlič, James Albon, Silvia L. Ballart and Štěpánka Jislová – will talk about their projects and explore their work. Don’t miss your chance to dive into their work. You can find all information and tickets here on the LICAF-website.

About The Lakes International Comic Art Festival
The Lakes International Comic Art Festival is the only one of its kind in the UK, centred on events and comics projects brought to you from one of the country’s most beautiful areas – the English Lake District, in the market town of Kendal. Modelled on European-style festivals, such as Angoulême in France, the annual Festival usually takes over the whole town for a weekend of comic art every October.
The Festival’s aim is to celebrate the whole spectrum of comic art, inspiring existing comic art fans and creators and, it hopes, generating new audiences and creators too. It invests in creators through a commissioning programme and has an emphasis on developing international collaborations.
The Patrons of the Festival are comic creators Yomi Ayeni, Kate Charlesworth, Comics Laureate Stephen L. Holland, Sean Phillips, Bryan Talbot, Mary Talbot, Zoom Rockman and Michael e Keli Lark.
The Lakes International Comic Art Festival is supported using public funding by the National Lottery through Arts Council England. It is supported by Cumbria County Council, Lake District National Park Authority, South Lakeland District Council and Kendal Town Council
Our main sponsor is Lancaster University and main partners are Kendal College, the Windermere Jetty Museum, the Old Laundry Theatre, NCS, Lakeview Bar and Grill and Baha
We are also supported by The British Council, The Czech Literary Centre, The Finnish Institute in London, Institut Francais, the Italian Cultural Institute, and the National Cartoonists Society, and other international partnerships
We also receive support from publishers David Fickling Comics, publishers of The Phoenix comic, Fanfare Press and Knockabout Press
Thanks also to our generous donors: Charlie Adlard, Lynette Adlard, Graham Dury, Peter Kessler, Bryan Talbot, Sean Phillips and Simon Thorp.
Arts Council England is the national development agency for creativity and culture. They have set out their strategic vision in Let’s Create that by 2030 they want England to be a country in which the creativity of each of us is valued and given the chance to flourish and where everyone of us has access to a remarkable range of high-quality cultural experiences.
Arts Council England invest public money from Government and The National Lottery to help support the sector and to deliver this vision.

Following the Covid-19 crisis, the Arts Council developed a £160 million Emergency Response Package, with nearly 90% coming from the National Lottery, for organisations and individuals needing support. The Council is also one of the bodies responsible for administering the Government’s unprecedented Culture Recovery Fund, of which we delivered over £1 billion to the sector in grants and loans.
