L’autore ce l’aveva comunicato dopo averlo saputo, mesi fa, ed il fine settimana scorso finalmente è arrivato il momento.
Bryan Talbot, classe ’52 originario di Sunderland, pluripremiato artista inglese (caro amico del sottoscritto e della nostra associazione) è stato inserito nella Hall of Fame dei premi Will Eisner Comic durante una cerimonia al Comic Con di San Diego.

Alice in Sunderland artist joins Comic Con legends
Un artista britannico, considerato uno dei primi fumettisti del Regno Unito, è stato inserito nella hall of fame internazionale.
Bryan Talbot, 72 anni e originario di Sunderland, è stato inserito nella Hall of Fame dei premi Will Eisner Comic durante una cerimonia al Comic Con di San Diego.
Il signor Talbot, autore di romanzi a fumetti pluripremiati come The Tale of One Bad Rat, la serie Grandville e Alice in Sunderland, ha dichiarato di essere molto onorato.
Entra a far parte di leggende come Stan Lee, Jack Kirby e la creatrice di Moomin, Tove Jansson, ed è uno dei 23 autori nuovi inseriti quest’anno.
Originario di Wigan, Talbot ha lavorato come artista nell’industria del fumetto underground britannico prima che la sua epopea fantascientifica The Tales of Luther Arkwright fosse pubblicata nel 1981 come una delle prime graphic novel dell’Inghilterra.
Ultimamente ha collaborato con sua moglie Mary, ex docente presso l’Università di Sunderland, vincendo nel 2012 il premio per la Costa sezione biografia per la loro graphic novel “Dotter of Her Father’s Eyes“.
Attualmente il signor Talbot sta lavorando a un prequel della sua serie Grandville e ha dichiarato di aver smesso di volare per motivi ambientali, ma non ha resistito a partecipare alla cerimonia di introduzione a San Diego.
“Non potevo davvero rifiutare questo evento unico nel suo genere,” ha detto, aggiungendo: “Specialmente visto che mi hanno fatto volare in business class e pagato l’hotel piuttosto costoso.“
Definendo la sua inclusione nella Hall of Fame come una “enorme sorpresa”, ha dichiarato: “È stato un grande onore.
“Molti dei miei eroi dei fumetti, come Jacky Kirby, creatore della maggior parte dell’universo Marvel negli anni ’60, sono stati inseriti in precedenza”.
Il signor Talbot ha anche detto di avere conosciuto Will Eisner, il rinomato disegnatore americano a cui è dedicata la Hall of Fame e i relativi premi, quindi è stato un privilegio essere associato a lui.
“Era una persona adorabile e un artista e scrittore di fumetti che incessantemente spingeva i limiti di ciò che il racconto a fumetti è in grado di fare”.

Durante la 36a edizione annuale dei Will Eisner Comic Industry Awards, tenutasi la scorsa settimana all’Hilton Bayfront, Bryan Talbot ha ricevuto il meritato onore precedentemente annunciato di persona. Altri premi vinti dalle donne includevano Miglior Serie Limitata (Caroline Cash, PeePee PooPoo), Miglior Pubblicazione per Giovani Lettori (Chelsea M. Campbell e Laura Knetzger, Bigfoot and Nessie: L’Arte di Farsi Notare), Miglior Pubblicazione Umoristica (Kelly Thompson e Gurihiru, È Jeff: Il Jeff-Verse #1), Miglior Pittore (Sana Takeda), Miglior Artista delle Copertine (Peach Momoko), Miglior Colorista (Jordie Bellaire), e Miglior Webcomic (Rachel Smythe).
Nessun editore ha dominato quest’anno, con premi assegnati a 24 editori diversi. Varie etichette di Penguin Random House hanno ricevuto quattro trofei, e Roaming ha ottenuto tre delle quattro vittorie per Drawn & Quarterly. Altri editori con più vittorie includono Fantagraphics (3), DC Comics (2 più 2 condivisi), Image (2 più 2 condivisi), e Marvel (2). L’unico altro creatore con più vittorie è stato Daniel Warren Johnson, per Transformers (Miglior Serie in Corso, Miglior Sceneggiatore/Artista).

The Bob Clampett Humanitarian Award, presented by Bob’s daughter Ruth, was presented to Regina Sawyer for Women Comics Collective International. The Russ Manning Promising Newcomer Award went to artist Oliver Bly; it was presented by past Manning Award winner Scott McCloud.

The 18th annual Bill Finger Award for Excellence in Comic Book Writing was presented by Mark Evanier to two recipients: Jo Duffy and the late Ralph Newman. Maggie Thompson introduced the special In Memoriam video salute to those from the Comic-Con family who died in the past year.

Biography
John Freeman is the founder of downthetubes, launched in 1998. He is a comics and magazine editor, writer, and Press Officer for the Lakes International Comic Art Festival. He also runs Crucible Comic Press.
Working in British comics publishing since the 1980s, his credits include editor of titles such as Doctor Who Magazine and Overkill for Marvel UK, Babylon 5 Magazine, Star Trek Magazine, and its successor, Star Trek Explorer, and more. He also edited the comics anthology STRIP Magazine and edited several audio comics for ROK Comics; and has edited several comic collections and graphic novels, including volumes of “Charley’s War” and “Dan Dare”, and Hancock: The Lad Himself, by Stephen Walsh and Keith Page.
He’s the writer of comics such as Pilgrim: Secrets and Lies for B7 Comics; “Crucible”, a creator-owned project with 2000AD artist Smuzz; and “Death Duty” and “Skow Dogs”, with Dave Hailwood.
